After a long struggle to learn how to capture skuas in a non-breeding year, we finally recaptured three Long-tailed Skuas with geolocators. We were just in time, because they are already forming flocks to prepare for their departure. Once in flocks, capturing will be even more difficult (but we’ll try that anyway in the coming days).
In the meantime, Johannes has found another nest of a brave skua, containing a single egg. Will it be successful in such a poor year? The other skua pair that tried (in Gelmetje) appears to have given up on the egg and left. It was one of the smallest skua eggs I ever measured.
